Brief - Product/Range/Distribution

PRODUCT / RANGE / DISTRIBUTION
BRIEF

Produce a body of work that demonstrates your growing understanding of your own practical and conceptual concerns in relation to appropriate areas of contemporary Graphic Design practices. Your response to the brief should focus on one of the following design disciplines as a starting point for your research and development:

Publishing & Editorial
Information & Way-finding
Branding & Identity
Product & Packaging
Retail & Promotion

You will need to be able to demonstrate an ability to deliver work that has the potential to communicate across a range of products, contexts and media. In light of this you should aim to deliver a range of solutions that explore the creative use of Type and/or Image in the development of appropriate design solutions for print and screen based delivery. Your work should demonstrate
Background / Considerations

In a professional context your individuality and effectiveness as a designer will be measured by the skills you have and more importantly how you apply them. You are viewed through your work, its personality, its tone of voice and creative concerns.
Your work should demonstrate an investigation of your own personal, practical and conceptual concerns within the design area and combine this with a self-reflective approach to your own creative and professional ambitions. In selecting briefs you should consider how each one will help you explore and exploit your own particular design ambitions i.e. typography, illustration, branding, packaging, digital, print etc. The briefs that you choose should help you clarify, define, establish, strengthen and /or challenge your individual understanding of where you are positioning yourself as a specialist practitioner.

Chosen YCN brief

After careful consideration, we decided to opt for the 'i' brief, which involves creating a campaign in an attempt to make the 20p daily paper the most read paper amongst students. Here it is:

For a while we were undecided between this and the 'Fredrigoni' brief. The Fredrigoni brief had a lot of creative potential and would have worked well as a sort of continuation of previous explorations made in the print module at the beginning of the year. There was also the potential to get quite heavily involved with colour management, which appealed to me quite a bit.

However; we felt that the 'i' brief presented us with quite quite an interesting task; particularly as it is geared towards attracting a student following. This puts us in quite an ideal location to begin tackling the problems presented; we are in a part of the city that is constantly swamped with student types, and obviously a lot of establishments have adapted themselves to cater for the needs of students (a good example being banks, who seem to switch up their adverts to shout out to students as opposed to professionals/families etc). Hence we are in a good position to immediately begin researching and developing ideas.

I think another reason the brief appeals to myself personally is the idea of potentially being able to directly have an impact on the people/places around me. If, by some miracle, we were to succeed and be chosen as the winners of this brief, it would potentially affect many of the people I see every day, as they are the target audience of this brief.

On top of all this, we felt that this kind of brief suited our skill sets pretty well; it seems like there will be some good opportunities to get involved using type/layout skills, as well as some deep thinking.

Top 10 Brief

.......TOP '10' THINGS......

BRIEF

Design & Produce a title sequence and set of 4 promotional idents/stings for a proposed TV programme – ‘TOP 10 BEST/WORST….’ or '10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT....'

Your response should aim to clearly communicate the subject, concept, content and mood of programme in a way that will engage an audience who have chosen to tune in. You should also aim to reflect the brand identity of the channel that - in your opinion -  would run the programme.
Background / Considerations

Title sequences for TV programmes are the most widely viewed examples of Motion Graphics in contemporary visual culture. Their primary function is to present the programme details, set the scene/mood and often establish a brand identity of a programme or series.

The ‘TV ident’ is a tricky thing. You have a 10 second window to deliver your message, concept and/or information. Too much going on and it doesn’t make sense not enough and your audience will loose interest. They often come in sets but have to work on their own. If you get it right they can be the most memorable part of a night infront of the TV. If not people will switch channels.

You will need to choose subject matter that you find interesting but also offers creative potential. You could choose:

Hairstyles, Sci-Fi Classics, Political statements, Religious sects, TV celebrities, Horror movies, Musical Genre’s, Ice cream flavours … the subject matter is up to you.

Your audience will be interested in your chosen subject matter to want to tune in. They will probably already hold their own opinions regarding their own best/worst. It is your task to engage them from the start.

Tone of voice should be appropriate to the content and consider the profile of your audience. You will need to state your audience as part of the development of your resolution.
